Another annoyingly image-free update

Again, I don’t really have any new “art” to post, but thought I should post something in the spirit of continuing to update this space. Otherwise I’m just paying for a place to host private storage of random things I never finish and that’s just super dull right?

I’m looking into some “simple” types of game development, using various free engines and such, and after spending a number of weeks looking into working an old Nanowrimo story into a Renpy game I’m now looking at maybe developing three separate games, all related, some in different engines.

This is not to say that this many games will happen, but that I have enough material to make at least one game happen. Eventually (if I end up being the sole developer, natch).

I’m not sure if I should even be saying that I’m doing it, but I’ve been at it in one way or another for nearly a year, and have finally made some of the main big decisions about it so it’s probably safe to say that A GAME that can be played on almost any computer will be developed by me between now and “the future”. I have all the means (which are free or nearly so and I will catalogue once I have something to show). I have a couple stories that can fit the engine/s. I’m excited at the prospect. Something is going to come out of this.

I really hope it’s good.

Spending time at the Art Academy

I’ve been knocked over by a nasty sinus infection so I don’t have much that’s scanned and postable. In the meantime I thought I’d upload a bunch of images from Art Academy lessons. I’ve done a lot of them as it’s easier to draw laying down with my gameboy 3DSXL than sketchpad and pencils. It’s also fairly simple to free draw in it with a photo on the upper screen for reference, so I’m going to paint some more original stuff too once I’m more comfortable with the interface. It’s kind of amazing to have digital painting AND my favourite version of Tetris on something like a gameboy. Just 5 years ago I wouldn’t have believed it.

Quick update

I’m working on getting some sketches and things done so I have something to post, but it’s slow going. I think I’ve ruined myself for plain old doodling with all the digital based things I’ve done the last few years. It’s easier for me to come up with random abstract things to play with in an art program than with standard pencil and paper. My brain just keeps screaming about how FINITE the materials are by comparison and doesn’t want to “waste” them. So silly.

I’m going to attempt to shake this by maybe watching some visually interesting movies or something and trying to sketch bits I like. Even if it’s as simple as “ooh that’s a pretty doorway” or something. Wish me luck!

Terminal fonts and blinking cursors

2011-11-03 16.43.00And we’re back again after another terribly long absence. The last couple of years have been eventful, far too eventful frankly, but things seem to be slowing a bit finally. I’m not going to lie, it’s been really difficult. I just didn’t have it in me to do much in the way of projects or posting things online, which is a huge problem as that’s pretty much my only job at the moment. We manage okay, I just hate feeling like I’m not pulling my own weight for extended periods of time.

That’s not terribly important at the moment however. What’s important is I’m doing my best to get back at it, and I started (as I often do) by tearing down the whole website and starting over again. It’s also pretty common for me to spend way more time tweaking the layout than actually posting anything, so this time I’ve given myself some soft limits. I’m sticking to default themes (since Automatic is determined to release a new theme every year that gives me some nice ones to choose from where I don’t have to worry about compatibility so much) and going hard on making custom headers and backgrounds, and that’s about it. No extensive CSS fiddling, minimal plugin use. Simples.

I mention the theming stuff because I’m pretty pleased with the two headers I’ve made so far and wanted to say a little bit about them. Normally I’d avoid using animated gifs as site graphics, but I really dug the idea of old terminal style text over top of the space themed stuff I tend to make, complete with blinking cursors. It’s a really simple 2 frame thing and I think it adds a bit of subtle interest. I’ll probably do a whole bunch of them eventually. If you’d like to download the font I used to play with it yourself it’s called Glass TTY VT220, I found it by simply searching “old school terminal fonts”. I love love love it.

For backgrounds, I’m working on a few repeating tile star field sorts of things. When I land on one or two that I like the best, I’ll bundle up the rest as a free download. The wallpaper packages and stuff will be going back up for download eventually too, I just need to find a download management method that works for me. I don’t get much traffic so hosting them on the site should be good to start, but I want to be able to move the files easily if it looks like I’ll start running out of bandwidth.

I think that about covers it for now. Stay warm everybody.
