There may be a better way

As I worked on this site I started thinking about getting together with a couple of folks and developing a new Wordpress theme with some built in functionality for various plugins and whatnot that might be useful to artists building portfolio sites. I was sorta inspired by the stuff going on at Awsom.com and thought it would be nice to have a couple of themes to contribute to the effort.

It turns out that someone has already done something like that, and it’s called Tarski…and it’s fantastic. I love it so much I want to try to port this design into it. It has support for multiple stylesheets so all I’d have to do is skin it, which is what I’m better at anyway. You can do all kinds of modifications that are separate from the core files, so when they release upgrades to the theme you can update without changing your edits.

It also has a rather ingenious way to include functionality for plugins (at least those that require that the site theme be hacked a little) without touching the core files, but I’m going to wait until I’ve actually messed with that before I talk about it.

I’m going to be working on this on a separate Wordpress install so you won’t see any changes here for a while. Eventually I’ll get down to creating a few more styles for the forum too. I’m sure there’s a few folks who might like to choose something other than “all pink” or “all blue”. I’ve got the web developer plugin for Firefox so this should go much smoother than all that stuff I was doing a couple weeks ago.
