Back when I was looking for a replacement for the smf forum (It took up too much room and was a bit too difficult to customize so it wasn’t a very good long term solution) I tested one of the beta versions of the upcoming phpbb3. I loved the admin interface and the look of it, even though it didn’t yet have the lovely prosilver theme available. I really really wanted to choose it, but it wasn’t ready for live use yet, and even if I’d decided to use it anyway I would’ve had to re-install it come the first release candidate (the developers had stated very clearly there would be no way to upgrade from a beta to an RC or final release version), so in the end I went with what I went with for various reasons. I almost went with phpbb2.0.22, but it’s nearly impossible to keep the spammers out of that version anymore.

Now that phpbb3RC1 is here, I’m going to move everything over. (The bb link in the top nav will take you to the new board.) Mybb is nice, but it’s not open source (which isn’t a big deal but I do try to stick to open source where I can) and the community at phpbb is very helpful. There are already a few nice themes for it, and thanks to colorizeit I’ve managed to add a few differently coloured versions of the default prosilver. If there’s a colour you’d like to see added, let me know and I’ll whip one up.

Finally, I just want to mention that I’m now using the Livejournal crossposter plugin, so all posts on this site will also appear on this LJ here, mostly because I have a couple of friends that read my LJ to keep track of how I’m doing, but I don’t post there directly very often anymore. I could’ve just created an LJ feed and given them a link to that, but you have to have a paid LJ account to do that, and this way it’s a little more geeky. I loves me some extra geeky
