The activation email problem has been fixed. It was a conflict in the settings (which was of course, probably my fault), but it has been resolved. New sign-ups will now receive an activation email. If you do not get an activation email when you sign up please comment somewhere on the website (like this post for example) or send an email to jenny (at) theweejenny.net.
