How dumb do the spammers think we are?
I think my site must be getting a wee bit more popular lately, not because I’ve been getting more hits (I haven’t really, it’s been about the same as ever) but because I’m getting waaaay more spam.
It’s getting interesting too. No longer am I just getting the automated stuff about viagra and porn, but strange and slightly more “personalized” comments that are meant to look legit but are of course, not.
The most interesting is one I got yesterday. This one actually claims that they can cut down on my comment spam by “asking” the spammers to leave my site alone, and all the dude wants in return is for me to place a link to a certain site on my “index page”. I’m reposting the comment here with all the dangerous parts removed, for our mutual amuzement and education.
hello , my name is Richard and I know you get a lot of spammy comments ,
I can help you with this problem . I know a lot of spammers and I will ask them not to post on your site. It will reduce the volume of spam by 30-50% .In return Id like to ask you to put a link to my site on the index page of your site. The link will be small and your visitors will hardly notice it , its just done for higher rankings in search engines. Contact me icq number removed or write me email@removed.com , i will give you my site url and you will give me yours if you are interested. thank you
I love how he leaves off the period at the end of the paragraph.
I’ve had a few variations of this sort of thing before but this is the first one to ask me to actually place a link on the site.
You know what I’ve found is the best defence against spam, besides Akismet? Setting WordPress options to hold all comments in moderation que if they were posted by someone that hasn’t been previously approved. That’s it. The only thing better is to shut comments off completely, but that’s not always a great idea either, depending on your site.
If nothing else, comments like this tell me that spammers are not getting better, just bolder.
