A word about advertising

Common After deliberation and discussion with my partner/spouse/lovemuffin we decided to remove all advertising from our collaborative site wherecraft.com. For some of the same reasons stated there, I’ve taken ads off theweejenny.net as well.

For nearly 2 years (I think, I don’t remember specifics since there was a lot of experimenting involved) I’ve had at the very least, one little adsense ad in the sidebar. In that time I’ve made roughly $2.45. Most of that I made in the last six months. I don’t think I’ll be loosing out on a lot by removing them.

I’ve been kinda unimpressed with googles ads for a long time, and I think I’m pretty much done with them now. The recent update to the user agreement stipulated that site operaters now have to have a privacy policy  warning users about cookies and web beacons and so forth, and while I don’t object having such a policy in place and veiwable by visitors, I do object to third party web beacons.

It’s bad enough that you can only filter 200 spammy slimy advertisers PER ACCOUNT, I’m not about to allow all the other stuff they now want to add. There’s a nice sample policy here that’s being made freely available (for those who might be interested) by the friendly author of Jensense (Hey! Another Jen! Woo!) and she’s also got a more comprehensive write up of the policy changes than I have the wherewithall to produce.

I’ve been intending to come up with some different ways to monetize anyway. I guess this is just the kick in the butt that I (we) needed. :/
